SprayedOut Free Editorial Image License

I share my photographs so they can be useful to bloggers, writers, publishers and other content creators.

If an individual image page says that a photograph uses the SprayedOut Free Editorial Image License, you may download and use it free of charge in a blog post, online article, travel guide, educational page or similar digital content.

Commercial and monetised websites are welcome when the photograph is used to illustrate genuine original content.

Please credit me as the photographer and link to the original SprayedOut image page whenever clickable links are supported.

You do not need to contact me before using an image for these ordinary permitted uses.

The main idea is simple: you may use the photograph as part of your own content, but please do not redistribute the image itself, sell it, claim it as your own or turn it into a product.

When This License Applies

This license applies only when the individual image page on SprayedOut clearly says that the photograph is available under the SprayedOut Free Editorial Image License.

Some older photographs use Creative Commons licenses instead. Please always check the license shown on the individual image page.

What You May Do

You may use an eligible photograph to illustrate original content such as:

  • blog posts and online articles;
  • travel guides and destination pages;
  • news, editorial and informational pages;
  • educational articles and online learning materials;
  • reviews, reference pages and useful resource guides;
  • company and organisation blog posts;
  • digital newsletters;
  • digital magazines, PDF publications and e-books;
  • social media posts connected to original content.

The photograph should support your content rather than being the main product or item you are distributing.

Commercial and Monetised Websites

You may use the photograph in permitted content on a website that contains advertising, affiliate links, paid subscriptions, memberships or other ordinary forms of monetisation.

This includes monetised blogs and genuine informational or editorial articles published on commercial company websites.

Writers, designers, publishers and agencies may also use an eligible photograph in permitted content created for a client.

You may provide the image file to a client, employee, designer, publisher or hosting provider when this is reasonably necessary to prepare and publish that content.

The image should not then be kept or used as a general stock photograph for unrelated projects.

Editing the Photograph

You may make reasonable changes needed to prepare the photograph for your content, including:

  • cropping and resizing;
  • compression and file-format conversion;
  • minor brightness, colour or contrast adjustments;
  • adding captions, text or graphic elements for the permitted publication.

Please do not edit the photograph in a deliberately misleading or harmful way.

Editing the image does not remove the attribution requirement or turn it into a new image that may be sold or redistributed separately.

How to Provide Attribution

Attribution is required whenever you use a photograph under this license.

A suitable credit is:

When clickable links are supported, either my name, SprayedOut.com or the complete credit should link directly to the original SprayedOut image page from which the photograph was downloaded.

For example:

Please place the credit in the image caption, directly below or beside the photograph, in the article’s image credits or in another clearly visible location.

The aim is simply to make it easy for readers to see who took the photograph and find its original source.

When a Clickable Link Is Not Available

Some social media platforms and digital formats do not support working links in captions.

In that situation, a visible credit such as this is fine:

Where practical, you can also include the written URL of the original image page or tag the official SprayedOut account.

Social Media Use

You may use the photograph on social media when it supports your own original post, provides useful information about the place or subject shown, or promotes an article, guide, video or other permitted publication.

A useful original caption about the photograph or its subject is also welcome.

Please do not use the photograph simply to build an image gallery, wallpaper collection, stock-image account or feed made mainly from other people’s photographs.

Please also do not offer the image as a downloadable file or suggest that your followers are free to copy and reuse it.

What Is Not Permitted

Please do not:

  • offer the photograph as a standalone download;
  • redistribute or sublicense it as a separate reusable image file;
  • upload it to another stock-photo, free-image, wallpaper or media-library website;
  • include it in an image pack, asset collection, template library or downloadable archive;
  • sell the photograph or a modified version of it;
  • claim that you created or own the photograph;
  • use it in a logo, trademark or brand identity;
  • remove embedded copyright or creator information when it is present;
  • use it in a way that falsely suggests that I endorse a person, company, product, organisation or political position.

Prints, Calendars and Products

This free license covers the online editorial and informational uses described above.

It does not include permission to use the photograph in:

  • printed books or magazines;
  • calendars;
  • posters or photographic prints;
  • greetings cards or postcards;
  • clothing, mugs or other merchandise;
  • product packaging;
  • print-on-demand products;
  • downloadable wallpapers, templates or design products.

Separate permission or a separate license is required for these uses.

Cropping the image, adding text, applying a filter or making another simple change does not make resale or product use permitted.

Advertising and Promotional Use

Commercial publication is permitted when the photograph is used to illustrate genuine original editorial or informational content.

This includes monetised blogs, articles containing advertising or affiliate links, genuine informational articles on company websites and permitted content created for commercial clients.

What this license does not cover is using the photograph itself as advertising or promotional creative.

Separate permission is required for:

  • paid advertisements;
  • promotional banners;
  • marketing campaigns;
  • product listings;
  • sales landing pages where the photograph is a main promotional visual;
  • product packaging.

About the License

The photograph remains protected by copyright.

This license gives you permission to use it in the ways explained on this page, but it does not transfer the copyright or ownership of the image to you.

The license is non-exclusive. This means I can continue to use the photograph and may also offer it through a stock agency or provide separate licenses for print, advertising, products or other uses.

The same photograph may sometimes be available from another platform under different terms. If you obtain an image from another source, the license supplied by that source applies to that use.

People, Property, Artwork and Trademarks

This license provides the copyright permission that I can give as the photographer.

A photograph may also contain recognisable people, private property, artwork, architecture, trademarks, logos or branded products.

Unless the individual image page clearly says otherwise, no model release, property release, trademark permission or endorsement is included.

If your planned use is unusual, highly commercial or sensitive, please consider whether any additional permission may be required.

Following the License

If you use a photograph under this license, please follow the conditions above.

If you later notice that the credit is missing or that your use falls outside the permitted terms, please correct the attribution, contact me about separate permission or remove the photograph.

I understand that honest mistakes happen. In most situations, a clear credit and a reasonable correction will solve the problem without turning it into a dramatic courtroom television series.

Future Updates

I may make minor spelling, formatting or explanatory improvements to this page without changing the permissions or restrictions.

If I make an important change to the license in the future, it will apply only to photographs that clearly link to the updated terms.

Uses Requiring Separate Permission

You do not need to contact me before using a photograph for the editorial and informational uses permitted by this license.

Please contact me if you would like to use a photograph for:

  • a printed publication;
  • a calendar, poster or photographic print;
  • advertising or a promotional campaign;
  • product packaging;
  • merchandise or print-on-demand products;
  • use without attribution;
  • standalone distribution;
  • an image library or wallpaper collection;
  • another use not clearly permitted by this license.

Please include the URL of the SprayedOut image page and a short explanation of where and how you would like to use the photograph.

I may be able to provide separate permission or suggest another licensing option.

Thank You

I created this license to make my photographs genuinely useful to bloggers, writers and publishers while keeping them connected to their original source.

If a photograph fits your article, guide or story, I am happy for you to use it.

Just provide clear attribution, link back when possible and please do not redistribute or resell the image itself.

Sharing is one of the reasons SprayedOut exists, and seeing a photograph become part of someone else’s useful content is one of the most rewarding parts of running the website.

Thank you for using the images responsibly.

Luke
