About the Picture
Nijubashi Bridge or Seimon Ishibashi that was my first dilemma for giving this picture a name, as it seems everywhere it goes by these two names. A beautiful architecture on the Tokyo’s Imperial Palace grounds, seeing it, I felt like I’m going back in time.
So what’s the answer, is it Nijubashi bridge or Seimon Ishibashi?
I discovered that many people refer to the iconic stone bridge as “Nijubashi”, but the correct name for the structure you see in this photo is actually Seimon Ishibashi – which literally translates to “Main Gate Stone Bridge”. Meanwhile, the more distant bridge behind it is called Seimon Tetsubashi (“Main Gate Iron Bridge”).
But collectively, these two bridges are often nicknamed “Nijubashi”, meaning “Double Bridge”. Over the years, “Nijubashi Bridge” has become the more popular term, especially for tourists seeking that postcard-perfect shot.
It was my actually third visit to the Imperial Palace, while during my first and second visit I explored Imperial Palace gardens, and inner grounds. My third trip, 5 years later I decided to just quickly come back to Imperial Palace grounds, and that’s when I discovered this beautiful, historic architecture, a bridge that I felt like the most beautiful founding around the Palace.
I just love the way it looks and it’s so picturesque spot.
Given the architecture, lush greenery, and alluring waters below, you can see why so many visitors are drawn to this part of the palace grounds. The combination of stately lampposts, the arching granite, and the reflection of the bridge in the moat (when the water is still) creates a mesmerizing scene.
It’s almost as though you’ve stepped back in time, into a world where craftsmanship and tradition blend seamlessly with the serenity of a royal garden.
It’s an iconic landmark, famous among tourists and photographers, a place that’s often featured in many travel photography publications worldwide, and I totally understand why.
At Seimon Ishibashi, you get to marvel at stone arches that reveal the Western influences which crept into Japanese design during certain modernization periods. What stands out is how the stone architecture is softened by the greenery surrounding the palace, all while the palace’s white walls peek over the top in the distance. It’s easy to see why so many postcards, magazine covers, and social media feeds highlight this location.
If during your travel you have a chance to visit the location at different time of the day, it’s highly recommended, as in the early morning, the bridge sometimes appears shrouded in the gentle mist, giving it a near-mythical look, while around sunset, the lampposts glow warmly, reflecting off the water’s surface.
Strictly speaking, the historic stone bridge visible in the foreground is Seimon Ishibashi. Despite this, travelers and guidebooks often label the entire view as “Nijubashi Bridge.” In many postcards or Google searches, you’ll see “Nijubashi” as the primary descriptor.
