About the Picture

This beautiful hospital in Barcelona, Spain is called be few different names, in everyday use, its simply called “Hospital de Sant Pau”, “Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau” – was called when the new modernist complex opened in 1930, combining the original name with Sant Pau (Saint Paul) to honor the banker Pau Gil, who funded the new hospital.

The current name is “Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau”, used since 2014 when the site reopened as a cultural center and museum. A place where we tourist can visit and enjoy its architectural beauty and aesthetics.

The hospital itself moved to the new, nearby location and it’s called “Fundació Privada Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau”, but the very first one was called “Hospital de la Santa Creu”, built in 1401! I agree with you, such a long history for the hospital itself and its names.

But here, we focus on the “Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau”, which I may just call by simple term, Sant Pau Hospital.

The museum I got to after visiting Park Guell (to which tickets were sold out so I didn’t enter), but it was a short walk away. Just so you know, when working on your itinerary in Barcelona, you might be able to see these two beautiful travel destinations one after the other, and I’m sure they are both very worth visiting.

When it comes to the Sant Pau Hospital itself, it’s a wonderful piece of art, designed by by Lluís Domènech I Montaner and now it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A place, a hidden gem, not extremely popular among tourists like La Sagrada Familia, or other places design by Antoni Gaudi, but I think it’s a must-see place.

Less tourists, mean also more enjoyable time while exploring. On the day when I was there, it happened, that they were filming a movie or a TV Show (I didn’t ask, but maybe I should), so I wondered, if that’s common.

As supposedly it is, it was used in the movie by Woody Allen called “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and other productions. So follow Woody Allen and add it to your travel bucket list. In fact, the hospital has been featured in various movies and TV shows due to its unique aesthetic and historical ambiance.

Visitors can explore the beautifully restored pavilions, taking a glimpse into the rich medical and architectural history of Barcelona.

The photo captures the central courtyard and the intricate details of the hospital’s main building. The golden domes, ornate mosaics, and garden, perfect place for photography (I will certainly add more pictures from the hospital) and learning about medical equipment and stuff. Check the official website for more interesting details.
