About the Picture
When planning what to see and where to go in Spain, Segovia and it’s famous aqueduct was on the top of my list, next to the Alcazar of Segovia castle. But here, I’m sharing with you a cityscape picture of Segovia aqueduct as the main theme.
This roman architecture is famous not just among foreign tourists, Spanish people love to travel to Segovia to see the aqueduct but also to enjoy this beautiful city, with and Old Town listed in UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Roman Empire created one of the most fascinated aqueducts in Segovia which brings tourists from all over the world. The picture I share with you was taken just before sunrise, in April. Luckily, the sunrise was at around 7 am, so no, I didn’t have to wake up extremely early to capture it.
It was also the time where the aqueduct was not occupied by all the people, and actually it was great to enjoy it alone, when slowly everything wakes up to life.
The Segovia Aqueduct is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in all of Europe, but was built nearly 2,000 years ago. The remaining portion of the structure reaches an impressive maximum height of 28.5 meters.
While photographing it, I couldn’t help but imagine how it must have functioned in its prime. The aqueduct was designed to carry water from the Frio River into Segovia, ensuring the city had a steady supply.
Even today, its design is an architectural marvel, blending seamlessly with the modern buildings around it and what’s important to know, no mortar, no cement was used to construct it. Just precision-cut granite stones that have stood firm through centuries.
But there’s more to the aqueduct than its engineering. It’s steeped in local legends.
One of my favorites is the tale of “El Puente del Diablo” – the Devil’s Bridge. According to this story, a local girl struck a deal with the devil to build the aqueduct in exchange for her soul.
But as the sun rose, the last stone wasn’t laid, and the devil lost his claim. Looking at the aqueduct during the quiet moments of dawn, it’s easy to see how such myths took root.
There is also a devil’s sculpture in the city, but I didn’t know about it in the time of my visit, so I didn’t take a picture of it. Why not to make it a goal for yourself, next time you visit?
I spent quite a bit of time photographing the Segovia aqueduct in the morning, and here you can find a picture of Segovia at sunrise, in case you need vertical picture of it for your blog.
Is Segovia worth visiting? Oh, I would go back to Segovia anytime I had a chance, so it certainly is. A trip that you will remember for quite a long time and full of great photography spots.
Beyond the aqueduct, you can explore the Alcázar of Segovia, which inspired Disney’s Cinderella Castle, or visit the grand Segovia Cathedral. But for me, the aqueduct is the soul of the city – a bridge between ancient and modern, perfectly captured in a single frame.
You can freely download this picture for your blog, website, or creative projects. All I ask is that you credit me as the photographer – it’s a small nod to the journey and care that goes into capturing shots like this.
