Free Temple of Debod at Night Picture: Egyptian Architecture in Madrid

About the Picture

When looking for ancient Egyptian temples, you don’t need to leave Europe to visit one. Temple of Debod, stunning Egyptian architecture that travelled from the ancient Nubia to Madrid in 1970–1972.

Originally, it was constructed over 2,200 years ago in Nubia (modern-day southern Egypt), this temple was dedicated to Amun, the god of the air, and Isis, goddess of magic and motherhood. Its journey to Madrid is a fascinating tale.

According to some mythological accounts, the Temple of Debod is thought to be the sacred site where the goddess Isis gave birth to Horus, the sky god. It’s now a very popular landmark in Madrid, located in the Parque de la Montaña.

A gem that brings many tourists and certainly a perfect place to enjoy the sunset, place from where Catedral de la Almudena and Royal Palace can be seen, here is the Catedral de la Almudena and Royal Palace in Madrid picture taken from just behind the Temple.

It’s fascinating, how such architecture could be dismantled in Egypt, stone by stone transported to Madrid and reconstructed. Every detail, including hieroglyphs and alignment with the sun was preserved.

I visited this ancient architecture for the sunset and “golden hour” and I believe it’s the best time to visit Temple of Debod. After sunset, the temple is illuminated, giving it a surreal glow against the sky.

The temple is an iconic landmark worth adding to your travel itinerary by itself, but luckily, its located in such a great spot that’s packed with places and things worth seeing.

Just few minutes away there is Parque del Oeste, beautiful park with ponds, walking paths and flowers, considered as one of the most peaceful places in Madrid.

Nearby you will also find Plaza de España, an iconic square with fountains, statues (like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza), and plenty of open space for relaxing and already mentioned, Catedral de la Almudena and Royal Palace (Palacio Real).

Once around Plaza de España, a short walk takes you to Madrid’s bustling Gran Vía, known for its shopping, theaters, and vibrant city vibe.

Oh, and there is Cable Car (Madrid Teleférico), currently closed for works, but once opened, you may want to enjoy it.

I think it’s great to explore the Royal Palace and Plaza de España, and end the day by enjoying the sunset at the Egyptian monument, the Temple of Debod + the viewpoint behind.
