About the Picture

This photo shows the Nagasaki Peace Statue in Nagasaki Peace Park, Japan. I took it in December 2025 during my trip to Nagasaki, while exploring the Peace Park before visiting the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.

Travel-wise, this image connects naturally with three important places in the area: Nagasaki Peace Park, Hypocenter Park and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. During the visit, we explored them in that order, which made the walk feel like a quiet introduction to the history and meaning of this part of Nagasaki.

After entering Nagasaki Peace Park, one of the first things I noticed was the Fountain of Peace. It is not just a decorative fountain – it commemorates the people who died searching for water after the atomic bombing.

Walking farther into the park, you can also see statues and monuments donated by countries and cities from around the world. I found that detail very moving, because each monument has its own style, but the message is mostly the same: remembrance, friendship, and a hope for peace.

The Peace Statue is one of the most recognizable symbols of Nagasaki Peace Park. It stands at the end of the park, in front of a small plaza, and feels like a very strong monument with a very important message.

The statue was designed by Japanese sculptor Seibou Kitamura. Its pose is full of symbolism: the raised right hand points to the danger of nuclear weapons, while the outstretched left arm represents the wish for eternal peace. The closed eyes are often described as a prayer for the souls of the victims. You can read more about the statue and its symbolism on the official Japan travel site: Nagasaki Peace Statue.

For me, that symbolism makes the image much stronger than a simple statue photo. At first glance, it is a calm travel picture from Japan. But when you understand the meaning behind the hands, the face, and the setting, the image becomes more reflective. It says something without needing to be dramatic.

Nagasaki Peace Park is closely connected with the memory of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and the wider message of peace. The park is also near places such as the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Hypocenter Park, so many visitors experience this area as part of a quiet and thoughtful walk through the city’s history. You can find more official visitor context on the Nagasaki Peace website: Nagasaki Peace.
