This photo shows one of the most recognizable family attractions in Yokohama, Japan – Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum. Yokohama is very elegant, modern – very business-like but this museum as you can see on the picture is very cheerful and adds color to the city.
The giant Anpanman statue, a character who is much bigger in Japan than many international visitors realize. Anpanman was created by Takashi Yanase over 50 years ago and now The Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum is one of the best-known character attractions for families in Japan.
What makes Anpanman even more impressive is just how enormous the franchise became over the years. The anime Soreike! Anpanman, which first aired in 1988, was recognized by Guinness World Records in 2009 for featuring 1,768 characters. That number alone gives you a good idea of how deeply rooted Anpanman is in Japanese popular culture.
If you are searching for things to do in Yokohama with kids, especially toddlers and preschoolers, I think it’s a perfect spot to visit. When I was there, it seemed very popular among kids and they seemed extremely excited when approaching the giant statue in front of the museum.
If you are travelling through Japan with small children and want to visit Yokohama, but not sure if your kids will enjoy it… the Anpanman Children’s Museum might be a place just right for you. If you have friends in Japan with kids and want to buy a gift for them, you can access the gift shops in the museum for free and selection of items is very impressive. That’s why I visited the place!
The museum sits close to other popular Minato Mirai attractions, which makes it easy to combine with a visit to the Cup Noodles Museum or with time at Yokohama Cosmo World, where you can find everything from family rides to larger roller coasters and the famous Cosmo Clock 21 ferris wheel.
