Ocean Waves Crashing on Rocks at Sunrise in Oarai, Japan

About the Picture

Don’t you love just watching the ocean sometimes? Listening to the waves, seeing them roll toward the shore and waiting for one to crash perfectly against the rocks? I do, and this morning in Oarai was exactly that kind of moment.

I took this photo in September 2024, during an early-morning photography walk along the coast in Oarai, Ibaraki Prefecture. The image captures an ocean wave crashing over the rocks at sunrise, with the Pacific stretching toward the horizon under a cloudy morning sky.

Sunrise Photography on the Oarai Coast

I’m definitely not an early riser. Getting out of bed while it is still dark, grabbing the camera and heading outside sounds much easier the night before than it feels when the alarm actually rings. But sunrise is often one of the best times to be outside with a camera, and Oarai gives you a pretty good reason to make the effort.

There is something special about arriving at the coast before the day really begins. The open ocean, the sound of the waves and that feeling of waiting to see what the sunrise will look like make even a cloudy morning interesting. No two mornings are exactly the same, and that uncertainty is part of the fun of sunrise photography.

Why I Like Photographing the Oarai Coast

This photograph was taken around Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Park, also described locally as Oarai Shore. It is a much rockier part of the coastline than the wide sandy Oarai Sun Beach farther south. The official Oarai Tourism Association page for Oarai Park and Oarai Shore highlights its reefs, pine forest and rocky coastal environment, where Pacific waves meet the exposed rocks.

For me, that rocky shoreline is what makes this part of Oarai especially interesting for photography. A sandy beach can give you a beautiful, clean horizon, but rocks add another element: movement. You can watch a wave coming in, guess where it will break and wait for that split second when the water turns into white spray.

Oarai is also a place where sunrise and photography naturally go together. Not far from here is the famous Kamiiso no Torii of Oarai Isosaki Shrine, standing on rocks beside the Pacific. It is one of the town’s best-known sunrise views and attracts many visitors, especially for the first sunrise of the year on January 1. The local tourism association also recommends Oarai Shore itself as a place to watch the sunrise. You can read more in its guide to sunrise in Oarai.

Watching the Pacific, One Wave at a Time

Sometimes it is enough to find a place by the water, sit for a while and watch what the ocean does. That morning I did a bit of everything – I sat and watched the waves, walked along the coast, explored different shooting spots and went over to the small lighthouse to photograph it as well. I kept coming back to the rocks and the changing light over the Pacific, waiting to see what the next wave would do.

That is probably what I like most about this picture. It is both peaceful and full of movement. The open sea and morning light give it the feeling of a sunrise seascape, while the breaking wave adds the energy that a completely calm beach photo would not have.

And that is what makes places like this enjoyable even when the sunrise is not spectacular. You can walk, look for different compositions, watch the waves, listen to the ocean or simply sit for a while. The light keeps changing, the sea never looks exactly the same, and there is always another wave coming.

If waves and rocky coastlines are what you are looking for, I also have another photograph of ocean waves and rocks in the SprayedOut archive. It can be a useful alternative if you need a different coastal scene for an article or project.

This free ocean and seascape photo can work well in travel blog posts, Japan and Ibaraki articles, coastal or nature stories, sunrise photography content, wellness pieces about slowing down by the sea, newsletters and editorial article headers. The combination of waves, rocks, ocean and morning light also makes it useful when the subject is broader than Oarai itself.

If this is the kind of ocean waves image you were looking for, you can download it and use it in your blog post or article with attribution.

I’m definitely not an early riser, but mornings like this make the alarm worth it. I took my camera down to the coast in Oarai and watched the sun slowly light up the Pacific while wave after wave crashed over the rocks — one of those simple moments that makes you glad you got out of bed.
