About the Picture
We came to Toruń, Poland, with a printed itinerary. Eight places we wanted to visit, all planned out for our day trip. Of course, I knew we might have to change things a little. Spend longer somewhere, skip something if we ran out of time. Normal travel stuff.
What I didn’t expect was that a few little angels would change our plans quite so much.
After arriving at Toruń Główny railway station, we started walking towards the Old Town. I was looking forward to crossing the bridge over the Vistula River and seeing the city from there. Would the weather be good? How would the Old Town look from the bridge? There was already plenty to think about.
And then I noticed something I definitely wasn’t expecting.
A little bronze angel. With wings and walking poles. Right there on the bridge.
I liked him straight away and stopped to take some pictures. That was Neucjusz, or Anioł Wędrowiec Neucjusz in Polish. One of the bronze figures belonging to the Toruń Angels project.
In this photograph, you can see Neucjusz standing on the Józef Piłsudski Bridge, with the Vistula River and Toruń’s Old Town skyline softly blurred behind him. I like how this small figure stands out against the much bigger city in the background. He felt a bit like us, really. Just another traveller on his way to explore Toruń.
At first, I thought it was simply a nice surprise. But then we noticed another angel. And another. By the third one, I started wondering what was going on. How many of these little figures were there around Toruń?
I still had our itinerary in mind, but luckily my better half, went into the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Town and came back with a map of the angels.
“You want to find all of them?”
“Yes!”
And just like that, our plans changed.
We decided to look for all the angels in Toruń’s Old Town. Some were easier to find, while others had been placed in surprisingly clever spots. Sometimes we had to stop, check the map again and look around a little longer; to be honest, even ask around! Determination was strong!
I won’t spoil those locations here. I think searching for them is part of the fun. It’s a bit like a treasure hunt, except that along the way you also get to explore the streets, buildings and corners of Toruń that you might otherwise walk past.
The sculptures are part of Śladem Toruńskich Aniołów, a project inspired by the angel that appears in Toruń’s coat of arms. The bronze figures were created by sculptor Małgorzata Więcławska-Furyk, who gave them different characters and details connected with their surroundings.
Neucjusz has his own meaning too. With his walking poles, he encourages movement and an active lifestyle. The sculpture was funded by Fundacja NEUCA dla Zdrowia and unveiled in December 2025. Quite fitting that I discovered this particular angel while walking into Toruń. You can read more about him on the official Toruń website.
If you’re planning a trip to Toruń, I’d really recommend giving the angels a little of your time. You can pick up a free map at the Tourist Information Centre (I’d recommend getting the printed map. There’s something more fun about finding your way with a map in your hands) or explore the official Toruń Angels map online. It’s a nice way to discover the Old Town, especially if you enjoy walking and finding things for yourself.
So here is a photograph of the first angel we found that day. But definitely not the last!
