Toruń Old Town at Sunset Cityscape, Poland

About the Picture

Before visiting Toruń, Poland, I already knew one photograph I wanted to bring home: the Old Town at sunset, seen from across the Vistula River. Kępa Bazarowa quickly became one of the most important stops on my day-trip plan.

I took this photograph in October 2026, looking toward the historic city from the opposite riverbank. The Gothic church towers rise above the red rooftops and medieval walls, while the evening light creates warm reflections on the Vistula. It’s a wonderful view of Toruń’s Old Town skyline, especially if you enjoy architecture and cityscape photography.

A Sunset I Had Planned for

I wanted to leave this viewpoint until the end of our visit, just before heading back to the train station. Watching the sunset over the river seemed like a perfect way to finish the day.

Earlier, we’d crossed the Józef Piłsudski Bridge on foot to explore the Old Town. That’s where I unexpectedly came across Neucjusz, one of Toruń’s little bronze angels. At the time, I didn’t know there were more of them scattered around the city.

Looking to the left from Kępa Bazarowa, I could see a beautiful red sun setting behind Piłsudski Bridge. It was the same bridge we’d crossed earlier on our way to the Old Town, where I first spotted Neucjusz, one of Toruń’s little bronze angels. The sun isn’t visible in this photograph, but it was another part of the evening view I had planned to see.

What Makes Toruń Old Town Special?

There’s much more to Toruń than its lovely riverfront. The Medieval Town of Toruń has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The protected historic area includes the Old Town, New Town and ruins of the Teutonic Castle.

Much of Toruń’s medieval street layout and Gothic architecture has survived. Looking at the skyline from across the river, you can appreciate the old defensive walls, church towers and historic buildings together, rather than one landmark at a time.

Toruń is also famous as the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who helped change our understanding of the solar system. And you can’t really talk about Toruń without mentioning its traditional gingerbread, known as pierniki toruńskie, with a history going back to medieval times.

Where to See This View of Toruń

The photograph was taken from Kępa Bazarowa, on the opposite side of the Vistula from the Old Town. The island is also a nature reserve, with a riverside viewing point where visitors can admire Toruń’s historic skyline.

You can reach the viewpoint on foot from the Old Town via the Piłsudski Bridge, or approach it from Majdany Street, near Toruń Główny railway station. The official Toruń tourism website has more information about the location.

For my trip, it was a convenient final stop, with approximately 10–15 minutes planned for the walk back to the station. If you’re catching a train, I’d allow some extra time rather than rush through the sunset.

If you’re visiting Toruń and enjoy photography, I really recommend keeping this viewpoint in mind. Even without a camera, it’s a lovely place to stop and see the city from another perspective.
