Fishing Boats at Sunset in Nakaminato Port, Japan

About the Picture

This picture shows fishing boats at sunset in Nakaminato Port, Ibaraki, Japan. I took it on 6 January 2026, during an afternoon walk along the waterfront.

I came to Nakaminato hoping to take some nice sunset pictures. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect beyond the port, the sea, and hopefully some beautiful evening light.

But as soon as I arrived and saw the fishing boats lined up along the waterfront, with the sun low behind them, I was already glad I’d come. Even if I didn’t get any spectacular photographs, the view alone would have made the trip worthwhile.

The sky was still pretty cloudy, though, and I wasn’t sure how the sunset would turn out.

Luckily, the clouds had something better in mind.

As the sun moved lower, warm orange colours began to spread across the sky and reflect in the calm harbour water. Suddenly, the boats and all those everyday waterfront details had a completely different background.

I especially liked the white fishing boat in the foreground, with its yellow floats hanging off the back. They almost matched the colours of the sunset. Not something I expected to notice, but a nice little detail!

Behind it, you can see more fishing boats, masts, ropes, and buildings along the waterfront.

It’s not one of those perfectly polished tourist views. This is a working Japanese fishing port, with boats, equipment, and all those little signs of everyday life around the harbour.

And that’s what I loved about the place. Nothing particularly glamorous, but so authentic. It felt like a real part of Japan, not somewhere arranged just for visitors.

Sometimes an ordinary place becomes a great photography spot simply because the light changes at the right moment. And on this January afternoon, I think Nakaminato showed me exactly that.

A Different Side of Nakaminato Port

Nakaminato Fishing Port is located in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Japan’s Pacific coast.

The area is probably best known for Nakaminato Fish Market, with its seafood shops and restaurants. But just nearby is another side of Nakaminato, with fishing boats, docks, and the everyday scenery of a working harbour.

One detail I found interesting is that Nakaminato has quite a history as a fishing port. According to Hitachinaka City’s official website (in Japanese), after World War II, Nakaminato served as Ibaraki Prefecture’s only base for distant-water bonito and tuna fishing.

Things have changed since then. The port later became more focused on smaller local fishing boats and vessels arriving from other harbours. It is interesting to think about how much fishing history there is behind what might look like an ordinary waterfront scene.

For me, Nakaminato was another reminder of why I enjoy exploring Japan so much. You don’t always need a famous landmark to find something worth photographing. Sometimes the everyday places, the ones you might easily pass by, are just as interesting.

And the fishing boats weren’t the only thing I photographed that afternoon.

On my way back, I noticed two Japanese vending machines beside an old industrial building. They became another photograph I shared on SprayedOut, although for completely different reasons.

Fishing boats under an orange sunset and two ordinary vending machines beside an old building. Quite a combination for one afternoon, right?

And there’s more from Nakaminato! I still have a few other photographs from the area that I plan to share here on SprayedOut.

Nakaminato Fish Market attracts more than a million visitors a year. But the fishing boats deserve a look too, especially when the winter sky turns this orange.
