Meguro Sky Garden: Rooftop Green Oasis in Tokyo

Did you know Tokyo has a rooftop park built atop a highway? Yes, it has. It’s called Meguro Sky Garden, located in Meguro City inside of Tokyo. A perfect example how you can bring gardens and sustainability to dense areas.

A very interesting blend of urban innovation and natural beauty. High above the bustling streets of Tokyo, a great escape that offers lush greenery, stunning views of Tokyo’s skyline and a place to just relax.

This picture is just an example of what you can expect from the top of the Meguro Sky Garden, a a hidden gem in Tokyo that’s hard to notice from the street level.

I have found Meguro Sky Garden when I was searching for things to see and enjoy around Tokyo, and because I was staying quite close to it (Shimo-Kitazawa) and already was planning to see some places nearby the Meguro Sky Garden, it was pretty obvious to me, that I have to take a look what’s it all about.

Certainly it’s a unique place, after visiting and doing my deeper research about the place, I’m sure I explored just a small part of it.

The purpose for creating this not-your-average-city-park was an effort to bring sustainability and beauty into urban spaces. From improving air quality to serving as a peaceful escape.

Rising up to 35 meters above the ground, this 7,000-square-meter green space is an example of urban ingenuity, blending nature and infrastructure – a living roof, designed to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and give a cool spot for locals and travelers to escape the city noise.

Once you get there, you can enjoy walking paths and seating areas, so you can simply relax and enjoy a book or something. If you’re a garden/plant lover, you’ll find a variety of plant species, including pines and seasonal flowers – shared in the circular design giving visitors panoramic views of Tokyo’s skyline.

Meguro City itself, is known for its vibrant cultural scene, and it’s home to the Meguro River, so popular for cherry blossom viewing in spring. An art enthusiasts can enjoy the Meguro Museum of Art, if they decide to visit the city, to enjoy some modern and contemporary works.
