About the Picture
If you’re searching for historic treasures during your travels and you’re travelling to the beautiful city of Valladolid in Spain, Santa Maria La Antigua should be on your travel itinerary.
It’s a must see landmark if you want to travel in time to 12th century, simply beautiful, with its tall Romanesque bell tower capped with a sharp, pyramidal roof, a style rarely seen in Spanish Gothic and architecture.
Even though it went through several restoration throughout the years, it has maintained its historic charm and significance while being of service for people of Valladolid for about 800 years.
Once in Valladolid, the location of the church is just perfect for travellers, the surrounding area is filled with charming streets, local cafes, and other historic landmarks, making it a perfect stop for anyone looking to immerse themselves in authentic Spanish history and culture, without the need of travelling far from the city centre.
If I’m not mistaken and I remember correctly, it was very close to the Museo Nacional de Escultura (Sculptures museum), another must-see spot in Valladolid.
As you can see on the picture, the church carries the timeless beauty, a beauty that transcends the ages. The soft hues of the stone, ranging from pale beige to earthy brown, evoke the warmth of the Spanish sun, while the shadows cast by the delicate spires and arches create a play of light and dark, a reminder of the church’s sacred role in both the spiritual and everyday life of Valladolid’s people.
Here, the very stones seem to breathe, imbued with the memories of prayers whispered in times of joy and sorrow. The Church of Santa María La Antigua is not just a relic of the past; it is a living monument, a testament to the enduring spirit of a city and its people, oh I really felt in love with Valladolid.
