Sweet Coneflower (Rudbeckia Subtomentosa ‘Henry Eilers’)

About the Picture

A flower that belongs to Rudbeckia genus family, very popular perennial flowers for gardens that attract pollinators with ease.

Sweet Coneflower, also called Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Henry Eilers’, quite often can be mistaken with Black-Eyed Susan flower, but as we can see it has some differences. Especially the petals, where Sweet coneflower has tubular petals, while Black-Eyed Susan shares flat, open petals.

I’m a big fan of them both and if I had a garden, would like to have them both planted next to each other. Here I have Black-Eyed Susan Flower picture if you need it, in case.

The picture was taken in Tokyo in Yoyogi Park in Shibuya. Quite a big park, where its flower garden received a Tokyo award in 2023. Congratulations!

If you want to know more about the Sweet Coneflower, in case you wonder if it’s something for you to plant in your garden, here are some interesting facts about it and few differences with Black-Eyed Susan flower:

  • The Sweet Coneflower is a native perennial that thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It’s particularly suited for pollinator gardens,
  • Black-Eyed Susans are also native perennials, but they are more versatile, thriving in various soil types, including dry, rocky conditions, which makes them a bit more drought-tolerant,
  • Blooming Season: Both plants bloom from midsummer to fall, providing long-lasting color and support for pollinators late into the season.
  • what’s interesting about the Sweet Coneflower is its anise-like fragrance, which is uncommon among flowers in the Rudbeckia genus. You could emphasize how this scent adds another sensory element to gardens that Black-Eyed Susans don’t offer,
  • Black-Eyed Susans, however, are iconic and widely recognized symbols of summer gardens, often referred to as the “wildflower of summer” in North America.

If you want to attract pollinators, bees, butterflies and even birds, they both are just perfect for that, but Black-Eyed Susan has more cheerful appearance, in my opinion.

But when choosing which one to plant is like choosing between two favorite summer outfits – each brings its own flair, and sometimes the best choice is to grow both!
