About the Picture
Just at the beginning of August, was the time when I took this picture of Ligularia Dentata “Othello” flower, yes I know, a name that’s so hard to remember. So lets just call it Leopard Plant, more friendly name for it, and actually so nice!
Isn’t it a gorgeous flower? One that gives so much positivity and vibrant colors to any garden?
Certainly, it’s a stunning perennial, that combines bold yellow flowers with deep purple stems and leaves, what a dramatic contrast that gardeners and photographers adore.
What’s great about the Othello plant, is that it blooms during the late summer to early fall, the time when most gardens are going for a winter nap. Nature’s talk, saying “Don’t give up on me yet!”. These golden-yellow daisy-like flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for eco-friendly gardeners.
Want some more interesting facts about this beautiful flower? As I already mentioned, its common name is the Leopard Plant. The name given to it not because of its flowers, but the leaves. While Othello leaves are more dramatic and deep in hue, the leopard-plant legacy still holds. Yes, I’m sorry you can’t just see any leaves on the picture.
Originally, Ligularia dentata is native to parts of China and Japan, where it grows naturally in damp and shaded environments.
Another interesting tidbit? Its common name, the Leopard Plant, isn’t about the flowers but the leaves—often spotted in some varieties. While ‘Othello’ leaves are more dramatic and deep in hue, the leopard-plant legacy still holds. Over the years, breeders have introduced varieties like ‘Othello’ to emphasize bold foliage and blooms.
If you do your own research, there is so many varieties of Ligularia dentata flowers, you might just get a headache when deciding to which one to get for your own garden. Just take one seed of each, right?
I love plants like this, yellow like sun, so positive. You may find other, similar looking flowers already photographed and shared here, so in case you need yellow-themed flowers, check: Sweet Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan or a yellow rose, which is a bit different type. But if I’m already sharing yellow flowers…
The Leopard plant is not just beautiful but is also easy to grow. All it needs is moist, well-drained soil and a bit of shade. If you’ve got a patch in your garden that’s too wet for most plants, this beauty will thrive.
Photographing Ligularia dentata ‘Othello’ is pure joy. The bold colors make it a natural focus for macro photography. In this picture, you can see the intricate details of the flower’s center, the subtle curves of the petals, and the soft background blur that highlights its charm.
Ligularia dentata ‘Othello’ can transform shaded gardens into colorful retreats, filling the late-summer garden with vibrant life and it supports pollinators like bees and butterflies. Just a perfect plant!
